What You Need to Know About Testing: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Submit an Application
Before taking any exams, you must submit your contractor license application to MSBOC.
Once received, we will:
- Review your application
- Notify you of any missing requirements
- Send you testing information contained in the PSI Candidate Information Bulletin
- MSBOC will notify PSI of your eligibility to test
PSI will then email you a confirmation notice

You cannot schedule your exam until you receive this confirmation. *If you don’t see the email in your inbox, please check your spam or junk folder. Be sure to mark the sender as “safe” or add the email address to your contacts to avoid missing future communications.
Step 2: Take the Required Exam(s)
1. Mississippi Law & Business Management Exam
Required for all applicants.
2. Trade Exam
May be required based on the type of license you’re applying for.

Step 3: Multi-State Licensing (Optional – NASCLA Exams)
If you plan to work in more than one state, you may want to take a NASCLA Accredited Exam, which is accepted in multiple states. Learn more on NASCLA’s website

Step 4: PSI Testing Process
- All exams are administered by PSI and are open book exams.
- Review the PSI Candidate Information Bulletin for scheduling details.
- The bulletin includes:
- How to register and schedule your test
- Reference materials and where to obtain them.
- Exam content outlines
- Locations for testing
Step 5: Exam Prep (Optional)
Trade exam prep courses do not teach a trade. Instead, they’re designed to help you understand testing formats, improve test-taking skills and reduce exam anxiety. The companies below offer exam preparation courses. This information is offered for informational purposes only.

Step 6: Final Review and License Issuance
Once you pass your required exams and your application is complete, it will be submitted to the Board for review.
- Completed applications are submitted weekly on Fridays.
- Only fully completed applications are reviewed.
Approved licenses are issued the following Wednesday.
You can:
- Use the Search Contractor feature on our website after 12:00 PM on Wednesdays
- Search the name you applied under to find:
- License number
- Expiration date
- License status
Your license is valid for one year from the date of issuance. It is your responsibility to renew your license each year.
